Phyllis J. Bedford is a Visionary Leader committed to helping girls and women develop the inner resources to connect with their personal greatness. For over 20 years she has promoted self-development, showing others how she transformed her life to help them achieve personal excellence. Phyllis, recognized as a Woman of Excellence by Wiley College, Marshall Texas, walked a personal journey to heal and recover from the loss of her daughter. Her inner strength, the essence of her identity, was her main source of support. Connecting with this inner strength energized her to do things she thought impossible, unleashed a burst of energy, power and spiritual renewal; and nurtured the confidence that she would not only survive but thrive. Her evidence-based journey can provoke others to find their own pathway to tap into their possibilities.
President and CEO – LKB Leadership Academy. Phyllis founded the nonprofit Leslie K Bedford Leadeship Academy in 1994. She built the brand and reputation of the organization and is experienced in resource management, operational oversight, strategic planning, and fundraising. She has a track record of successfully setting and meeting aggressive goals. She brings out the best in people by setting high standards and exhibiting honesty and integrity so that others feel confident giving her their support and commitment. A self-learned grant writer and fund developer, she secured and managed nearly $1M in grants and fundraisers for programs and college scholarships.
State-of-the Art Building Block Programs. Phyllis has 20 years of experience in Human Resources and Communications, and 20 years of experience in Program Development. She has written curriculums, implemented innovative Building Block Programs; and conducted leadership academies and programs for girls in 4th – 12th grade. She formed partnerships with Dallas ISD, Cedar Hill ISD, Dallas County Community College District, recreation centers, churches and other organizations, improving the status of thousands of girls.
Gender Specific Research/Analogy. Phyllis collaborated with Dallas County Community College District to present the Speak 2B Heard Forum for middle school girls on the challenges they face growing up. Texas A&M-Commerce analyzed the responses and applauded the forum as a model for developing adolescent girls’ self-identity, self-efficacy and self-esteem. Their findings and recommendations were published and shared with stakeholders. Phyllis also led the effort to produce a video on Shattering Stereotypes of African American Teenage Girls, featuring leadership academy participants and several community leaders.
Mentoring Program. Phyllis formed a Professional Women’s Network, made up of career women whose major responsibility was to mentor young women in the LKB Leadership Academy. It was later replaced with the LKB Alumnae Network.
Scholarship Program. Phyllis secured grants to award scholarships to young women to give them a jump-start to attend their college of choice.
Self-help Publications. Phyllis is the author of A Personal Journey – Finding Wings With Shattered Pieces and the accompanying workbook, RESPECT, an in-depth look at how to overcome tragedy and become stronger. She is a contributing author of “Letters While You Wait: A Little Book of Encouragement.” She is currently working on two more book projects: “Standing Out In A Crowd” and “Listen To My Heart.” Her blog and articles provide insights and strategies that inspire others to transformation.
Faith Based Initiatives. Phyllis founded the Early Childhood Learning Initiative (ECLI) for Marsalis Avenue Church of Christ. She facilitates Women Of All Season Bible Class, where she motivated and championed women with undiscovered talents, to write and publish a book, “Letters While You Wait. Out of this book project was born the While You Wait Ministry, a holistic outreach to women in shelters and other family organizations.
Consulting Services and Workshops. Phyllis provides consulting services and conducts seminars and workshops for school districts, educational institutions, businesses, churches and other organizations on PLP: Personal development, Leadership development and Program development. She empowers others to turn their dreams into reality and discover their true worth and personal greatness.
Phyllis lives in DeSoto Texas; and has one daughter (deceased), two sons and four grandchildren. She is a member of the Church of Christ at Marsalis Avenue, Dallas TX.
